The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office
The Sheriff’s Office is located in the Jefferson County Courthouse, and maintains the hours of 8:30-4:30 Monday through Friday. Our Office is responsible for security of the courthouse and all county buildings, its employees and visitors. The Sheriff’s Office issues permits to carry concealed and County Licenses to Sell Firearms. The office is also responsible for processing and serving civil paperwork and daily transportation of county inmates. The Office conducts Sheriff Sales of foreclosed properties in Jefferson County on a monthly basis. The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office continues to serve the citizens of the county in a respectful, meaningful and helpful way.
Jefferson County is a 6th class county with a population of 45,000 residents and covers 692 square miles. There are 23 Townships and 11 Boroughs covered by two full-time police departments and two part-time departments. The Pennsylvania State Police also have one barracks within the county and is partially covered by two other neighboring barracks.
The Sheriff’s Office maintains a staff consisting of a Sheriff, Chief Deputy, Sergeant, and five full-time deputies. The office currently has two office civil positions. The civil positions handle all permits to carry firearms and civil paperwork that comes through the office, including processing not only Court of Common Pleas paperwork, but also all Magistrate Civil papers.
The Sheriff’s Office processes thousands of permits to carry on a yearly basis. The office also processes hundreds of civil papers for the Court of Common Plea and also the three Magisterial offices on a yearly basis. The office also processes hundreds of tax papers on a yearly basis.
The Sheriff’s Office is responsible for serving all warrants issued within Jefferson County. The office processes thousands of warrants on yearly basis including District Attorney, Domestic Relations, Probation and all Magisterial warrants.
It maintains as necessary, security for court proceedings such as trials, Plea and Sentence Court, Probation and any other court related hearings requested. The courthouse has one main entrance for public use and is maintained by an armed deputy. To enter you must pass through a magnetometer and packages are passed through an x-ray machine. The employees and row officers may enter through a back door using their personal security pass.
The deputies transport prisoners on a daily basis to their court proceedings. We transport hundreds of inmates on a yearly basis. They may be to Common Pleas Court, one of the (3) County Magistrate Offices, or taking an inmate to a medical appointment or to the hospital emergency room for a medical issue. They also bring inmates from other counties for court related hearings. The office has had Prisoner Transport Service bring back prisoners from other states by extraditions for crimes committed in Jefferson County. Our deputies have personally completed multiple extraditions thus far from out of state. The deputies also help enforce the traffic laws within the county if they are out and see a violation happening.
The office continues to maintain drug boxes at three locations throughout the county for proper deposal of prescription drugs for area residents. The boxes are located at the Jefferson County Courthouse in Brookville, Punxsutawney Police Department, and Brockway Police Department. The boxes are available for drop off by the public anytime during their office hours. The office safely disposes of hundreds of pounds of drugs on a yearly basis.
The office continues to schedule one week for firearms qualification, during which we qualify our deputies along with any of the municipal police departments in need of qualifying.
The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office continues to serve the citizens of the county in a respectful, meaningful and helpful way. The office continues to be available to all law enforcement agencies as needed for assistance.

Sheriff Sales are typically held on Fridays, once monthly. Jefferson County Sheriff Sale properties are posted on the board outside of the Sheriff’s Office in the Courthouse. They are also advertised on Thursday’s in either the Punxsutawney Spirit or the Jeffersonian Democrat, depending on the area the property is located in. They are also always advertised in the Jefferson County Legal Journal, which is published on a monthly basis by the Law Office of Heidi Dennison in Brookville, PA.

The Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting Applications to carry concealed between the hours of 8:30-4:00, Monday through Friday. You may print and fill out the application; however, do not sign and date the bottom until you arrive at the office. We cannot accept applications through the mail, as you are required to have your picture taken for your permit. The cost is $20.00, cash or check. The office DOES NOT accept cards at this time for payment.

If you are a current or new business wishing to sell firearms, you must have a License to Sell Firearms. You may print out this application here online and bring it in to our office, with cash or check for $57.00. You will also need to bring a current copy of your issued FFL License in order to get your License to Sell.
